Why Starpoint's Locked In to Lock Out Cancer Is Such a Powerful Tradition

By Carly Dell’Oso, 2021 Starpoint Graduate

Locked In to Lock Out Cancer is a long-standing tradition in the Starpoint School District, first launched by a group of students in 2013. Since its inception, the event has grown tremendously, raising an impressive $183,000 for Roswell Park Comprehensive Cancer Center. It’s not just a fundraiser, it’s a celebration of school spirit, student leadership, and community support.

Planning for Locked In begins in September, when the student committee starts reaching out to local businesses for sponsorships and donations. These contributions are critical in helping to cover the cost of food, entertainment, and supplies, allowing the full student pledge amount to go directly to Roswell Park. We appreciate these sponsors, as their support makes this all possible.

The event is held each spring at a time that avoids conflicts with sports seasons and follows the school musical. This ensures that all students have the opportunity to attend. Students in grades 9 through 12 are invited to participate, and each must raise a minimum pledge of $40. This includes a custom t-shirt and water bottle for the night. Outside food and drinks are not permitted.

How Locked In Works

The rules are simple but strict: no sleeping, no coffee, and no energy drinks. Still, students manage to stay awake and energized from 8pm to 6am thanks to a full schedule of entertainment, games, tournaments, food buffets, and inflatables. Notable past entertainers have included Jeff Musial of Nickel City Reptiles and Dennis George of Quizmasters trivia.

This night would not be possible without the support of our district administration and the many faculty chaperones who volunteer. Staff members from the primary school all the way to the district office come together to help make the event a success. The lock-in is truly a one-of-a-kind Starpoint experience.

A Year-Long Effort

While it is our biggest fundraiser of the year, Locked In is only one part of our efforts. The student committee also hosts several other events throughout the year, including fall senior vs. junior sports tournaments, pink-out games for our fall teams, bubble tea and bake sales, and a springtime kickball tournament.

The Locked In represents more than just a fun night. It is a powerful tradition built on generosity, teamwork, and community pride.
